The Hidden Pages Quietly Hurting Your SEO
Every website has a junk drawer.
Old drafts, test pages, a "Home Copy" you made two years ago while trying out a new layout. You forgot they exist. Google did not.
This is one of those quiet, behind-the-scenes problems that almost every small business website has, and almost no one knows to look for it.
What Happens When Google Finds Duplicate Pages
When Google finds two pages that look almost the same, it has to guess which one matters. Sometimes it guesses wrong.
Instead of sending traffic to your real homepage or services page, it splits the attention between both and neither one performs as well as it should. Your SEO effort gets diluted across pages you did not even know were live.
I recently found a client's draft homepage fully live and showing up in Google's index. She had no idea it was there. It was competing directly with her real homepage for the same searches, and quietly dragging her rankings down the whole time.
How to Clean Up Your Website's Junk Drawer
The good news is this is a quick fix. Set aside about 15 minutes and work through these four steps.
1. Look at your full page list. If you are on Wix, open your Pages menu and scroll through everything, including hidden pages. You want to see every single page that exists on your site, not just the ones in your navigation.
2. Spot the leftovers. Look for anything named "copy," "test," "old," "new," or anything you do not recognize. If you are not sure what a page is, click on it and take a look.
3. Delete or hide. If you do not need it, delete it. If you want to keep it for reference, go into that page's SEO settings and turn off the option that allows search engines to index it. In Wix this is under each page's SEO settings tab.
4. Redirect if needed. If a deleted page was ever shared or linked somewhere, set up a redirect so anyone who lands on that old URL gets sent to the right page instead of hitting an error.
Think of it like tidying up before company comes over. That company is Google, and it stops by a lot more often than you think.
Why This Matters More Than You Might Expect
Duplicate and forgotten pages are one of the most common issues I find during SEO audits. They pile up gradually and invisibly, and most business owners have no idea they are there until someone goes looking.
A clean, well-organized site tells Google exactly what matters and where to send people. A cluttered one makes Google guess, and you do not want Google guessing.
If you want to know what else might be quietly working against your site, that is exactly what my SEO audit uncovers. Book a free call hereĀ and let's take a look.
