How Often Should You Update Your Website? Hint, Hint...It's More Than You Think

You probably spent a good chunk of money on your website. Or a serious amount of time. Or both.

And when it launched, it was clean, tight, and exactly what you wanted. But here's the thing nobody tells you when you hit publish: websites age. Quietly, gradually, and usually without you noticing until it's a real problem.

What Happens to a Website Over Time

As you add content, tweak colors, update services, and make small changes here and there, your website starts to lose its integrity. Pages get inconsistent. Old information lingers. Things that used to work stop working. The overall feel drifts from what you originally intended.

It happens to everyone. My site does it. My clients' sites do it. It is just the reality of having a living, changing business on the internet.

Think of it like buying a car and never replacing the tires or getting an oil change. If you want it to keep running well, you have to maintain it. Your website is no different.

How Often Should You Actually Be Maintaining Your Website?

Here is what I recommend for most service-based small businesses:

Every month:Ā Fresh content and ongoing SEO. This keeps Google coming back to crawl your site and signals that you are an active, relevant business worth ranking. Even one blog post a month makes a difference.

Every 6 months:Ā A cleanup pass. Go through your pages with fresh eyes. Check for outdated information, broken links, inconsistent formatting, and anything that no longer reflects where your business is today.

Every 2 years:Ā A full website overhaul. Design trends change, your services evolve, and what felt modern two years ago can start to look dated. A full refresh every couple of years keeps your site looking like the professional, trustworthy business you are.

The Question Worth Asking Yourself

When is the last time someone looked at your website with completely fresh eyes?

Not you. Not your business partner. Someone who has never seen it before.

If you cannot remember, that is probably your answer.

Your website is your biggest marketing asset. It is working (or not working) for you around the clock, on days you are not posting, not networking, not sending emails. It deserves the same attention and upkeep you give everything else in your business.
