The Wick Newsletter: How I lost My Voice in Corporate America

5/15/26 Newsletter
Most of my career has been spent in Corporate America in the tech sector working for old, white men. If you can imagine, it was a HOOT. (Did you feel my sarcasm?)
When you work in Corporate America for so long, you start to lose your voice. You can't show too much of who you are, you (if you're like me - and I hope you haven't) deal with sexism, you feel like your opinions don't matter, you clock in, clock out, and go home, and then do it again the next day.
I distinctly remember one trade show where I was talking to a potential customer, selling him on the details of a big printer and the director of sales was standing there listening. When I was done, in front of the customer, he said, “I was just listening to see if you actually knew what you were talking about. I'll take over now.”

I was shocked, mad, angry, embarrassed, and honestly, I thought this cannot be my end all be all - how the F do I leave this world?
When I first started my business, I was still suckered into the mentality of Corporate America. Don't show too much of who you are. Make a brand that's for everyone. Talk like you're a robot, so you're professional.
It has taken me a long time to find my voice again, and know there is an audience out there that wants to hear it (and no, it's not for salesmen in the tech sector).
So here I am. I like flowers and needlepointing. I take a lot of naps, but I'm also really good at creativity and making pretty brands. I play Mahjong once a week, but I can also get you found on Google.
Here's to finding your voice, using it, and taking a risk to make something with it. And if you need help finding your brand voice, I'd love to chat.
